On Tuesday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the assembly room, Dr. Susan Swearer, Professor of School Psychology and Co-Director of the Bullying Research Network at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, will speak to parents and community members about her research on bullying behavior and prevention. A licensed psychologist, Dr. Swearer is the co-author of several books and hundreds of articles on these issues, including Bullying Prevention & Intervention: Realistic Strategies for Schools. She is considered one of the leading experts in the nation on school-aged bullying, depression, and anxiety. She has appeared on CBS Sunday Morning, was a presenter at the White House Bullying Prevention Conference in 2011, and worked with The Country School faculty in August 2011. She is also serving as a consultant to our school as we have increased attention to issues around peer relationships and bullying behavior.
Dr. Swearer will focus her remarks on defining bullying and explaining how it differs in boys and girls and at different age levels. She will help parents identify signs and symptoms suggesting that a child is being bullied, is a bully or bystander. She will share with parents how to respond if they suspect their child is filling one of those roles, and she will address the role that media and electronics play in bullying and how to counteract their influence.
Dr. Swearer is a highly engaging speaker, so I am hoping for a strong turnout. Also please invite your friends who are non-Country School parents, as we are opening this talk up to the community at no cost. I look forward to seeing you at school on March 20.
