Third Grade Spanish Guiding Principles
1395.jpg
Learning the numbers

 1) Total Immersion

Once students enter the Spanish classroom, all communication will be conducted in Spanish. All instructions and activities, whether written or spoken, will be provided in Spanish. Students are expected to communicate with each other and with their teacher in Spanish and /or gestures if vocabulary is limiting.

2) Differentiation

Students will receive individualized instruction based on their particular capabilities. Students may be grouped according to proficiency level, and may receive instructional materials based on thoise levels. Small-group time with the teacher will aid in providing differentiated instruction.

3) Total Physical Response

Teacher will use Total Physical Response (TPR), a physical acting out of concepts, instructions, or vocabulary, to mantain an immersion environment. TPR will be introduced to students as a basic communication tool for beginning language learning.

4) Addresing Student Anxiety

Puppets will be used to diffuse foreign language anxiety and to appeal to students' sense of play. Teacher will use puppets to illustrate dialogues, teach new vocabulary, and interact with students.

5) Speaking and Listening

Emphasis will be placed on speaking and listening capabilities. Writing and reading activities will be used to further oral communication. Students will use peer-to-peer speaking activities, computer listening and speaking programs, small group instruction, and creative performances and/or games to enhance speaking and listening skills.

6) Authentic Correction

Teacher will practice authentic correction rather than overt correction. In situations where students use improper grammar or incorrect vocabulary, teacher will place priority on students' attempt to use Spanish. Teacher will repeat back corrections through continued communication.

7) Constant Interaction

Teacher will place emphasis on students interacting in Spanish, rather than direct grammar instruction. Students will be exposed to a myriad of activities in Spanish during each class period and will have constant opportunity for language practice.
