The primary focus of the foreign language curriculum is to introduce the student to modern and classical languages and the various cultures and civilizations associated with them.
Spanish instruction begins in Kindergarten, Latin is introduced in seventh grade, and both continue through eighth grade. Students learn the basics of how to read and write the language as well as how to speak and understand the oral language. They are exposed to the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.
Latin is offered to seventh and eighth graders in enriched and regular sections which meet four times per week. The regular section concentrates on the language and the legendary origins of Rome whereas the enriched section moves at a faster pace and spends more time on studying the culture of the Romans' daily life. The students learn the basics of translation both from Latin to English and from English to Latin. They are exposed to the culture of the Romans and their influence on American culture.
Students who have successfully completed the course work can enter the second year of high school Spanish or Latin since a solid foundation for further study at the secondary level has been provided.
