ᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠAs most of you already know our theme for this year is sustainability. As a way of making an abstract concept more concrete we have defined sustainability as “the idea of using the earth's treasures wisely. Recognizing that there is a limit to these treasures, we need to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Try to leave the world better than you found it; take no more than you need; try not to harm life in the environment; and make amends if you do.” So far this year numerous initiatives related to sustainability have been set into motion. The initiatives are designed to make our students more aware of their impact on the planet and to teach them strategies for reducing this impact, with the ultimate goal of helping them become more informed and better stewards of the environment.
ᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠIn previous years the school has focused on the theme during a designated theme week. This year we are raising the bar by adopting the theme of sustainability as part of the culture of the school as well as celebrating theme week. I am sure you have heard stories about “Mr. Sustainability” and the creative theme week projects developed by and shared with students of all grade levels during the first week of October. Other programs developed or expanded upon this year, like the recycling of paper, aluminum, plastic, glass, and cardboard as well as the composting of left over food, are a few examples of initiatives that have already become permanent fixtures in our daily routine. Please keep an eye on the weekly calendar and the CS website to learn more about this year's theme and upcoming news.
ᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠMost notably please have your family take a moment to read and answer the monthly “sustainability question” in the calendar. Then take a moment to come up with a way to address the issue raised and e-mail your thoughts per the instructions in the calendar and on the website. You can earn some black or gold credit for your team while simultaneously engaging your children in a dialogue about an issue they will eventually have to manage as responsible adults.
