Late last month, when we were focusing on The Country School value responsibility, I was amazed to hear a story entitled “Look What the Recession Has Brought” on the radio program “Marketplace.” Evidently, Rosewood Middle School in Goldsboro, North Carolina, has been pressed for funds. As a result, the school’s parent advisory council came up with a new fundraising idea that the school administration approved: selling test points. For $20, students could get 20 points to distribute on tests of their choosing. There was no word on a maximum number of points that could be purchased. When the state department of education expressed concern, the principal responded that the school had tried selling chocolates but that that didn’t bring in enough funds. I think we’ll be sticking to our rummage, gift wrap, and plant sales and our auction, even if selling points has proven lucrative elsewhere!
