Despite missing numerous rehearsals due to this winter’s epic snowstorms, the cast of the Upper School production of The Wizard of Oz has staged a spectacular and dazzling success. I always think it’s fitting that the performances straddle the months we focus on The Country School values commitment and cooperation. After all, it’s these virtues that the show requires in abundance from its cast and reflects so clearly to its viewers.
While the audience is treated to wonderful acting, singing, choreography, and staging, the cast and crew members are learning lasting lessons that extend far beyond these technical aspects of theater. They learn about the power of what can be generated when people come together around compelling common goals. They learn about responsibility, perseverance, team work, going beyond one’s comfort zone, doing one’s best, performing in front of a crowd, and the satisfaction that comes from devoting one’s energy to a demanding but healthy pursuit. Our hallmark Upper School musical is a remarkable vehicle for these important life lessons as well as for creativity, community building, and memory creation. The fact that all this learning also produces a highly engaging show makes it all the more magical.
If you haven’t gotten to see the musical, I hope you will come to this weekend’s final performances. In addition to supporting our amazing cast, crew, and incredibly dedicated directors, producers, and parent volunteers, you will be treated to a wonderfully entertaining, wholesome, classic show. This year’s production of The Wizard of Oz will prove once again that there’s no place like The Country School!
