1. Students should read for 15 minutes every night. On most nights, this will be reading from a book chosen by the student. However, there will be times that assigned reading is sent home. I encourage your child to read aloud to you, at least 50% of the time. Second grade is a time for increasing independence with reading, but listening to your child read, and then having conversations about that reading, is a wonderful gift that you can give your child.
2. In addition to the 15 minutes of reading, students should spend 15 - 20 minutes on assigned homework. Assignments will include spelling, math, writing and language arts practice.
3. Homework is meant to be for review and reinforcement of material covered in class. Students should be able to complete the assignments independently. If your child experiences frustration with an assignment, or cannot complete it without your help, please stop working on that particular assignment and send it back to school with a note. It is important that I know when the instruction in class was not sufficient for independent review and reinforcement at home.
4. No homework will be assigned on the weekend, but students are encouraged to continue reading over the weekend and holidays. Reading is like brushing your teeth - you should do it every day!
