2011 Outstanding Young Alumna
Samantha Basham '04
Country School alumna, Samantha Basham ‘04, exemplifies some very important personal traits that have led to strong success.  Sam has always demonstrated determination, commitment, responsibility, strong athletic skills, and a natural way of treating others well.  She models The Country School values, doing her best always and using the gifts she’s been given in order to make things happen and to accomplish what she sets her mind to.

While at The Country School, Sam was a strong all around student, athlete, and citizen.  She came in 7th grade and made a place for herself in her class, which isn’t necessarily an easy thing.  She was always respectful, she could always be counted on to lead by setting a strong example, and she developed an interest in writing, which figures into the future she has made happen for herself.

After graduating from The Country School, Sam went to Gunston Day School, where she was a member of the rowing team from its inception and became team captain.  She played soccer, was a member of the swim team all 4 years and the captain her senior year.  She was VP of the National Honor Society, and involved with community service and environmental work.

After Gunston, she first went to University of Mary Washington, where she was on the varsity crew team.  The next year, Sam transferred to American University in DC, where she is now an honors journalism major.  She is an American University Ambassador, one of a select group of students who do admissions outreach work.  She has also been involved in community service work at AU through their “Students Helping Honduras” program.

Sam has made a few extraordinary things happen for herself.  First, after her sophomore year, she landed an internship with What’s Up Annapolis? Magazine. Sam’s writing was so good that she had numerous articles published, and she continues as a paid contributing writer, something quite unusual for a college student.  Recently, she accepted an internship with National Geographic in their marketing department and because of her strong performance, she was hired as a summer photo editing intern for their books division.

And so, because of the way Sam continues to embody Country School values, because of her exceptional commitment, responsibility, determination, and accomplishments, we have decided she is a very fitting recipient of our Outstanding Young Alumna Award for 2011.
