It is in the art room where children are provided the opportunity to visually express themselves through art where they have the opportunity to work in many areas including painting, printmaking, clay, weaving, 3-D, and of course, drawing! Students seem to work the hardest at things that give them success. Because there are no "right" or "wrong" works of art, EVERY child can succeed! My goal is to make sure students know what to do, how to do it, and do their very best! It is not necessarily to teach everyone to be an artist, but to teach students how to "see" so they can make educated choices AFTER they have been educated. This, in itself, is necessary throughout the whole education process.
Many of the art projects are related to what students are studying in their classroom. Students learn and retain more when they are able to make associations. Students become better thinkers, develop higher order skills, and deepen their inclination to learn. Skills too, are reintroduced to develop more proficiency and greater understanding.
Students are encouraged to be creative, to take pride in their work, and to do their very best! Students learn how to "see," and how to look at things in a positive way. Just as in artist Degas' statement- "Art is not what you see, but what you make others see."
