For September, The Country School will be learning about the value of honesty through discussions, role-playing, writing, art and our shared story,The Narwal's Tusk, by Carla Heymsfeld .
Whenever possible, take time to talk to your child about honesty. Children learn more by your actions than your words so continue to set good examples for them to follow. Set up hypothetical situations when you are with your child. Talk about how you would deal honestly with a salesperson giving you too much change. Discuss telling a police officer you were exceeding the speed limit instead of making an excuse or not being honest about the speed you were traveling.
Provide positive reinforcement by complementing and phrasing your child when he or she handles a situation honestly. If your child tells a lie, take the time to explain how being dishonest not only hurts him or her, but also the other people involved. Help your child set goals regarding honesty, not only for this month but for a life time.
Here are other ways you can reinforce the value of honesty with your child: - Visit your library and read books dealing with honesty as a theme or books about people who have spoken or behaved honestly. Revisit our shared stories about honesty.
- Watch a video together that deals with honesty.
Thanks for being our partner in helping teach your child the value of honesty! |
