Salvete, Omnes!
Welcome to Mr. Winkler's Homepage!

The primary purpose of Latin study at The Country School is to expose the students to the language and culture of the Romans and to show them the ways that the Romans have influenced our language and life. Use of the traditional method of Latin study provides students with a structured approach to language acquisition, emphasizing reading and composition. At the elementary school level, reinforcement of English grammar, building English vocabulary through Latin, development of logical thinking, and improvement of study skills are equally important ancillary objectives.

Stress is placed on mastery of forms, understanding of the foundation of sentence structure, and the acquisition of a small but important vocabulary of about 300-400 words. Emphasis is on accuracy, frequent comparison of Latin with English construction, and the use of English words derived from Latin.

The development of an historical perspective and of a general cultural background through an increased knowledge of facts relating to the life, history, institutions, and religion of the Romans is encouraged.

Eighth grade students take the American Classical League's National Latin Exam. In addition, interested eighth grade students are encouraged to participate in Maryland and Virginia Junior Classical League activities, to take the National Mythology Exam and, when appropriate, to submit work to the National Junior Classical League's Creative Writing Contest. Latin Club is offered to interested eighth grade students after school on Fridays.
