Fifth graders spend a day in the fall and a day in the spring on the Lady Maryland, a replica of a Chesapeake Bay pungy schooner, a boat which sailed the Bay in the 1800's. The Lady Maryland sails as part of the Living Classrooms Foundation's educational fleet, providing hands-on, multidisciplinary educational programs.
Students in the sixth grade spend one and a half days and one night at the Echo Hill Outdoor School in Worton, Maryland. Students in the seventh grade spend two and a half days and two nights at Echo Hill. Echo Hill Outdoor School provides students with positive experiences in the outdoors where they learn more about nature, the value of history, and the diversity of individual qualities. Students participate in sensory exploration classes, sleep in canvas platform tents, eat in an outdoor dining hall, and learn in the outdoors. Small, hands-on classes provide opportunities for students to explore the forest, meadows, ponds, streams, swamps, marshes, beaches, fields, farms, towns, and waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
Students in the 8th grade spend 2 and a half days and two nights at the Sheridan School Mountain Campus, a 130 acre wilderness facility in the Shenandoah National Park. The campus offers a blend of environmental activities and adventure education in a beautiful, natural setting with meadows, ravines, ponds, a creek, trails, and heavily wooded slops. At the Sheridan School Mountain Campus students enrich their knowledge of themselves and their environment and build on the cooperative and trust building skills that they have acquired at Echo Hill Outdoor School. Students participate in leadership and responsibility enhancement activities and enjoy rock climbing, a ropes course, caving and backpacking expeditions, and canoeing.
