Upper School Implements New Class Schedule

By: Wilson Everhart
The Upper School Faculty has created a new class schedule for the 2016-17 school year. This new schedule offers more sustained teaching time, cuts down on the number of transitions students are asked to make each day, and offers students an important element of choice and ownership over their learning.
The teachers are especially energized by this new schedule, as it allows them more time for the type of compelling project- and activity-based learning that is so important for middle school students.

Key Components of Our New Schedule:
  • A shift from eight 45-minute blocks Monday-Thursday to six 60-minute blocks. We still have 2 recess periods and a lunch period each day.
  • On Fridays, there will be one 60-minute and four 45-minute blocks rather than seven 35-minute blocks; dismissal is still at 1:00.
  • 7th and 8th grade students may choose to study Spanish or Latin or both. Students who choose to take only one language will have one study hall, 1 DEAR class (Drop Everything And Read) and 1 STEAM class (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.)
