Latin

Latin is offered to Upper School students beginning in 6th grade. All students are exposed to Latin as 6th graders, after which they may choose to continue with either Spanish or Latin in the 7th and 8th grades. Students learn the basics of translation both from Latin to English and from English to Latin. Focus is also given to the massive influence that the Latin language has had on the development of the English language, while also exploring Roman culture and the mythology surrounding the language.

Students also have the opportunity to compete in area Certamens, which may culminate in the MDJCL National Convention, in which their knowledge of Latin and Roman culture is put to the test.
