Social Studies

The social studies program exposes students to a variety of concepts in the areas of both history and geography which provide each student with the opportunity to develop an understanding of how our physical and cultural worlds have evolved. Beginning with home and family and expanding to global issues, emphasis is also placed on economics, sociology, religion, philosophy, political science and the arts. Students develop problem solving skills which enable them to explore and investigate their heritage and learn how they fit into a global community, living in America today.

Study in Kindergarten through second grade focuses on school, family, and the community. In grades three and four, the students examine certain periods of American history. Fifth and sixth grade students take a two year course that covers the world from prehistoric times through the age of colonization. Seventh graders study the history of the United States through the end of the 19th century. The eighth grade course of study covers the world in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The social studies program is designed to help students learn about the great ideas, issues and controversies of the past and present in order to help them become perceptive and concerned citizens of the world. Connections are established between the students' ideas about the local community, the state, the country, and the world.
