Technology

MacBooks in use in the classroom.

We live in a rapidly changing world virtually dominated by advances in technology. Mobile technology is taking over many of the tasks we do on a day-to-day basis. Computing devices have shrunk from the desktop to fit into the palm of your hand. Communication and collaboration are cornerstones of education today. Our technology program recognizes these changes and has adapted to expose our students to the most current technology while reinforcing and expanding classroom instruction and enhancing the overall school curriculum.

Students learn to use technology as a tool for accessing, organizing and presenting information. Students develop critical thinking and reasoning skills to solve everyday problems.

Students in Kindergarten through fourth grades have computer instruction once a week with the classroom teacher and the computer instructor. Fifth graders also have computer instruction once a week, and third through fifth graders also spend one term of the year working on Keyboarding skills.

The program offers a balanced, flexible curriculum that provides a firm foundation in computer basics and literacy. Essential skills in reading, language arts, mathematics and the sciences are reinforced and learning strategies are explored in an innovative environment. Technology has moved from the “computer lab” to the classroom. Each subject and grade have built in to the regular curriculum a variety of technology related projects that allow the use of the latest technology while still meeting traditional academic standards.

The school has four mobile carts of 18 laptops each. The library has 10 iMacs and eight laptops allowing every child in the class access to technology. There are also additional laptops dedicated to Lower School classrooms, science and Spanish. Two carts of 40 iPod Touch devices are used by even our very youngest pupils, and a cart of 20 iPads bridges the gap between the iPod and laptop.

All these devices provide access to the Internet through the wireless school-wide network substantially upgraded in the summer of 2011. The network offers many opportunities for collaboration and communication both within the school community and the world at large.
