Dear Families and Students,

Welcome to the Lower School, where curiosity, kindness, and joyful learning come together each day.

It is a privilege to lead a community where childhood is honored, learning is celebrated, and each student is truly known. From our youngest Pre-k learners to our confident and capable fourth graders, students in the Lower School are encouraged to wonder, explore, create, and grow in a nurturing environment rooted in strong relationships and high expectations.

Our program is intentionally designed to support the development of the whole child. Core academic learning is thoughtfully balanced with a rich array of specials, including music, art, science, Spanish, library, PE, and Makerspace, ensuring that every student has opportunities to discover passions, develop talents, and express themselves in a variety of ways.

We place strong emphasis on purposeful learning—learning that integrates thinking with rich forms of feeling and doing. Whether students are building a bridge in Makerspace, writing a persuasive letter, or collaborating on a group project, they are engaged in experiences that connect intellect with empathy and action. This approach helps students develop not just what they know, but who they are becoming and how they contribute.

While we recognize the importance of technology in today’s world, we also believe in the enduring value of foundational skills. In the Lower School, technology serves as a tool, not a driver, of learning. We prioritize handwriting, note-taking, and the ability to organize and express ideas clearly on paper. These practices build focus, critical thinking, and lasting habits of mind that prepare our students for a future in which thoughtful communication matters more than ever.

What truly sets our division apart is the warmth and expertise of our faculty. Our teachers are not only skilled educators; they are attentive listeners, creative thinkers, and caring mentors who partner closely with families to support every child’s academic and social-emotional journey. Their commitment creates a sense of belonging that allows students to take risks, embrace challenges, and experience the joy of learning each day.

As Division Head, I am proud to work alongside such a dedicated team and to witness daily the wonder and growth of our students. Whether you are just getting to know our school or are already part of our community, I invite you to visit the Lower School and see the magic for yourself.

Warmly,

Kitty Davis
Head of Lower School
