Implemented at the start of the 2017-2018 school year, Stop Together and Read (STAR time) is a 20-minute period immediately following homeroom and advisory where the entire Country School reads independently. Kindergarteners enjoy hearing a story from their teacher for the first half, and can page through or read a book for the remainder of STAR time.

Normalizing and encouraging reading for fun has led to children as young as 2nd grade having conversations among themselves about their books, and reading logs kept by Lower School students add up to hundreds and sometimes thousands of minutes per year of independent reading.

Because the purpose of reading is comprehension (or getting meaning from written text), our teachers work diligently to engage their students in the active process of constructing meaning from what they read in order to foster competent and enthusiastic readers.
