Looking at School Through New Eyes

By: Julie Frederick
Mrs. Frederick is a long-time teacher at TCS and now has a whole new outlook about our school.
I have been privileged this year, after so many years at TCS, to be able to look at school with fresh eyes, thanks to my kindergartner, Luke. He is so happy to arrive at school each morning that he runs up the sidewalk to the front door. (Early, before there’s any parking lot traffic!) He laughs as he tells me about funny performances at assemblies (which I saw in person!), proudly tells us at the dinner table whether the book read to him that day was fiction or nonfiction, quizzes us on Spanish color words, and asks endless questions to find out what we know about the topics he’s learning about in his classes. When asked his favorite part of school, he’ll answer enthusiastically, “Every part!”

What a delight to be reminded that all these parts of school that we as teachers - or as parents of older children who have been through these grades before - might take for granted, that we’ve done so many times that they may no longer seem novel to us, do indeed have an impact and make an impression. The Country School experience provides so many opportunities for students to grow, connect, and try new things. My child gets to spend his days in this place where he’s excited to arrive every morning, where he feels everyone is his friend, where every single part of his day is the best part. And I do, too! And I am so grateful.
