TCS Welcomes Ryan Catterton

By: Annie Hasselgren
Read the second in our New Faculty Profiles series on TCS musical director Ryan Catterton.
Following the retirement of Rick Osborne after 31 years at The Country School, we welcome Ryan Catterton as our new musical director. Ryan is known in Easton for his musical accomplishments and experience teaching people of all ages. Ryan has taught at Talbot County Public Schools, Chesapeake Christian School, and Chesapeake Children’s Theatre (which will close at the end of this summer).

A Midwesterner, Ryan attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where he earned his Bachelors in Music Education, and later taught at the local public schools. He moved to Easton in 2005 for a teaching opportunity with TCPS and has lived here ever since. But: “I am originally from Appleton, Wisconsin, and am a homegrown Green Bay Packers fan,” says Ryan.

Ryan performs regularly with several music ensembles in venues such as the Tidewater Inn during Waterfowl Festival to the Avalon Theatre. He is a percussionist and guitar player, but he teaches most instruments and plans to roll out an instrument program at school this coming year. Ryan and his wife, Lauren, love to cook, are always looking for new recipes, and are kept busy by their 3-year-old son, Gabriel.

“My educational philosophy is that music is a language with no restrictions,” Ryan says. “I think musical understanding, appreciation, and ability are inherent in all people, regardless of age or ability. It has been my pleasure and privilege as an educator to see so many young people flourish and develop over time as young musicians. I look forward to experiencing this at The Country School.”
