Take Full Advantage of Spring Break

By: Megan Brooks
Mrs. Brooks offers ideas for maximizing spring break.
One of the many things we are fortunate to have as faculty and staff, students, and families of The Country School is a spring break. Often this break falls independently of a holiday and provides us all with a chance to relax and enjoy a break from our daily responsibilities. Every year I look forward to this time off because it affords me the opportunity to press the reset button, get organized, and set goals for the final portion of our school year. Whether your break is filled with out of town travel or a staycation at home, we can all find time this break to relax, reestablish routines, and return to our normal schedules with energy and enthusiasm as positive as we entered with in September. Here are some ways I spend my spring break that help me best prepare for a successful end to the school year.

  1. Get organized! In September we all start the year off with items neatly in place, a home for every possession, and certainly no piles stacked all around our work spaces. Spring break is a time for me to go through my school bag, desk at home, and rid any space being taken over by those dreaded piles of paper. Whether you started the school year off organized or not, it’s never too late to take some time to bring order to certain aspects of your life.

  1. Reestablish routines! At the beginning of the school year, or even in January after the start of a new year, we can find ourselves diligently sticking to a routine. Spring break is a time where I take a moment to reflect on routines I can be doing a better job of maintaining. For me, it’s often going back to a better nightly routine of packing my lunch, laying out clothes, and gathering school materials for the next day. In our house a better nightly routine leads to a more successful morning and getting out the door much earlier.

  1. Set goals! Goal setting is not just for September or when we make our New Year’s Resolutions. Every spring break I take time to set a personal teacher goal and a goal I would like my students to achieve before our year is over together. This may mean I reflect on goals I have already set and determine if they were met or maybe it means setting a new goal. Taking time to reflect on the school year thus far and what I would like to accomplish in the final months of school helps me stay focused and motivated as we approach summer.

I wish you all a relaxing and rejuvenating spring break! Hopefully you can find time as a family to press your reset button and come back to school feeling refreshed and ready to successfully tackle the remaining months of our year.
