10 Reasons Why I Teach Art

By: Gina Brent
Lower School art teacher Gina Brent shares a bit about her love of art, her love of teaching, and how fortunate she feels to combine them as a career.
  1. It’s Fun!
  2. Elementary students enjoy it!
  3. There’s no right or wrong answer!
  4. You get to use different materials!
  5. No two works look alike!
  6. Students get to express themselves creatively.
  7. Students experiment with a wide range of materials.
  8. You get to try new ways of creating something.
  9. You learn about other artists.
  10. It enriches students’ lives.

Early art-making is a unique tool for a child to learn patience and dedication while discovering their own creativity.  The quote by Degas, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see,” helps to build a foundation for students to learn from.  This, too, provides a solid foundation for others to learn from too.  For me, teaching art is teaching students how to “see” so they can make educated choices.
