Mrs. Brooks' Future Cougar
Second grade teacher Megan Brooks shares what milestones she looks forward to sharing with her son.
Reflecting on this past year, I cannot help but stop and smile. 2018 brought our family one of our greatest joys when we welcomed our son Bennett into the world. These past nine months have been filled with laughs, love, and exploration as we watch Bennett reach each developmental milestone and experience things for the first time.
While I certainly do not want to wish time away, I am already eagerly anticipating the day our son Bennett can attend The Country School. My husband, Patrick, is a TCS graduate and has many close friends from his time at The Country School. Long before I began working at TCS, I heard stories of Patrick’s time at The Country School. He and his friends look back on their K through 8th grade time with a fondness every parent dreams of for their child. Now as a teacher in the school my husband attended, I have the privilege of experiencing some of the same traditions Patrick holds dear to his heart. We both feel extremely fortunate Bennett will get to learn and grow in a place so special to us. Here are the top five things I am most looking forward to Bennett getting to experience:

1) A handshake from Mr. Mufson
When a child has to shake an adult’s hand each morning it certainly leaves a lasting impression. Over the years I have heard Patrick and his friends talk about how shaking Mr. Mufson’s hand each day taught them to properly introduce themselves, especially when put in situations as young adults. I am looking forward to Bennett getting to experience this same morning ritual.
2) The holiday breakfast and assembly
Nothing could have prepared me for this day my first year at The Country School. I knew it would be special, but I never imagined just how special the day would be. From seeing the students in their dressy clothes to the grade level performances during the assembly, this is easily one of my favorite days of the school year. It’s is such a wonderful way to come together as a school community and celebrate before the long holiday break.
3) Preschool
Bennett may have to follow in his father’s footsteps for some things at The Country School, but attending Pre-K at TCS will be something unique to him. We are looking forward to the added year at The Country School and Bennett having a strong foundation prior to entering Kindergarten.
4.) Special snack
Who doesn’t love getting to have a special treat every Friday? Patrick and his friends still talk about how great special snack was on Fridays. Apparently dirt cups were even popular all those years ago. As a teacher, special snack represents just one of the special traditions we have at The Country School. Whether it’s special snack, Dorothy Andrew Day, or Wednesday morning assemblies, I look forward to Bennett getting to experience the same special traditions his dad did so many years ago.
5.) Amazing teachers
As a former student, Patrick has fond memories of teachers who helped shape him into the person he is today. He can tell me stories of teachers who made their classes fun and the teacher who helped get him serious about his quality of work as a student. As a teacher, I look at my coworkers in awe. These people I am lucky enough to call colleagues are passionate about what they teach and love what they do. Bennett will undoubtedly have a remarkable kindergarten through 8th grade experience because of the amazing teachers we have at The Country School.
