Upper School Activities & Clubs
We want students to try new things and get involved with anything and everything that speaks to them. Here are some Upper School club offerings:
Latin Club
Latin Club for any interested eighth graders meets on Mondays during lunch in Mr. Vega's room from October through April. Interested seventh graders may participate on Tuesdays at lunch in the same location, starting later in the year. In general, students use this time to prepare for events sponsored by the Maryland Junior Classical League, the Maryland Senior Classical League and the Virginia Junior Classical League. These events take place on Saturdays, approximately one per month, from November until April. Permission slips for the competitions are available from the teacher. Students spend their time practicing for team academic competitions (certamina), making a scrapbook of club events, decorating a chariot, or doing artwork.
Madrigals
The Madrigals is a special performance group comprised of Upper School students who enjoy the opportunity to sing at special events such as Graduation and Awards Day. Usually the group is formed in early May, and the girls generally rehearse once a week during a recess period. Participating in Madrigals is a way for a student to have extra opportunities for performance. The songs sung by Madrigals add a very special touch to the school’s special occasions.
Math Counts
Math Counts members, sixth through eighth graders, meet at least once each week and work together to solve a variety of Math Counts problems. They solve the problems and then study the skills needed to solve the them, always looking for strategies that accompany the solutions. Approximately 25 students are club members, and compete against each other in order to select a team to compete in the regional competition in Annapolis every February. This is always a very exciting event.

Student Council
The Country School Student Council is comprised of two student representatives from fifth through eighth grades. Representatives to the Student Council are chosen twice a year in their homerooms. The Student Council sponsors spirit weeks for each athletic season, organizes two Upper School dances, and collects money and is responsible for the distribution of Wednesday lunch pizza. Throughout the year, the Student Council raises funds to distribute to a worthy local organization at the end of the year. Student Council members also assume various leadership roles throughout the year. Members of the Student Council meet with the Head of the Upper School throughout the year to discuss issues.
Student Newspaper: The Cougar Times
Started by an enthusiastic group of students, The Cougar Times is The Country School’s very own student newspaper. Students in grades 5-8 are responsible for every facet of the paper – reporting, photography, editing, and layout. Students receive instruction in the key elements of journalism. Student editors and a team of regular reporters and photographers staff the paper, but other members of the student body are encouraged to contribute free lance articles and pictures.
Peer Advocates of The Country School
Peer Advocates of The Country School (PACS) is a leadership group that works together to set the standard for positive relationships in a school setting. The goal of PACS is to empower students who recognize the wealth of differences that exist in our upper school and give them the tools to stick up for others. These seventh and eighth grade students demonstrate interest and are selected via faculty vote. While working with PACS, students receive training and attend workshops on racial and ethnic diversity, brain differences, gender stereotypes, and much more. In addition, the faculty sponsors meet with students to discuss current trends and issues in the lives of students today. Together, we work to create strong leaders who embody The Country School values and strengthen the supportive environment that already exists in our school.
