Outdoor Ed Changes

By: Wilson Everhart, Head of the Upper School
Next year, there will be significant and compelling changes to our Outdoor Education curriculum. While this information will most immediately affect the rising 6th-8th grade families, I share this information with the entire community, as every student will eventually take part in this cornerstone program. I also want to use this announcement to sing the importance of providing opportunities for your children to develop comfort and familiarity with the out-of-doors and the surrounding beauty of the Eastern Shore. Similarly, I want to emphasize the benefit of providing moments for your children to spend the night away from home before 6th grade. Whether at summer camp, a sleepover with friends, or at the home of a beloved grandparent, overnight and outdoor experiences can be transformational for your children; and they will prepare them well for the Upper School’s exciting Outdoor Education curriculum.
Regarding the changes to our Outdoor Education curriculum, next year’s 6th grade trip will be a three day experience, and this is one day longer than past 6th grade trips. Additionally, the 6th grade will be going to a new location, as the class will head south to the eastern shore of Virginia. At Camp Silver Beach, the 6th grade will study bay and forest ecology, orientation, astronomy, and shelter and fire building skills. The students will sleep in cabins where they will learn alongside and be chaperoned by Country School and YMCA educators.

The 7th grade will continue to attend the wonderful Echo Hill Outdoor School in Worton, MD for three days. This group will challenge themselves on high and low ropes courses, study the Chesapeake Bay, and develop greater leadership skills under the guidance of Country School teachers and the Echo Hill staff. These students will also sleep in cabins within earshot of the Chesapeake Bay.

The 8th grade trip will represent a true culminating experience, as the 8th graders will head off on a 3 day backpacking adventure. This trip will be led by the staff at Camp Horizons, the organization that has hosted our 8th grade in the past, as well as Country School faculty members. This is the first time we will take our 8th grade students backpacking, and I look forward to this experience becoming a beloved tradition and challenge for our 8th graders, as they use the camping, co-operation, and leadership skills they have honed in their time at The Country School.

Over the course of this three year progression, it is our sincere hope that our students will feel a greater connection to the natural world; experience success, failure, and challenge in a setting outside of the classroom setting; and bring valuable lessons of resilience, flexibility, responsibility, initiative, and a joyful spirit into our classrooms and their daily lives.

In the coming months, I will be in touch with the rising 6th-8th grade parents with more specific details, and I thank in advance the Country School Parents Association for making these important trips available at no additional cost to our families.
