Explanation of the 2018-2019 Calendar

By: Neil Mufson
Our calendar looks a bit different this year, due to our exciting construction project. Mr. Mufson lays out the details here.
At the bottom of this piece is a link to the Tentative Calendar for 2018-19. Given our upcoming building project, the calendar is going to be different for the next two years.  All of these gyrations are brought on by the need to give the contractors adequate time for quality construction while trying to satisfy the Maryland statute requiring independent schools in our state to schedule at least 173 instructional days based on local snow day patterns. I believe it is safe to say that, over the years, The Country School has had the fewest snow days, late openings, fog days, and emergency early closings of any school in the state. But we still need to comply with the requirements of the law, even when undertaking as significant a project as is planned. Thus, you will notice the following in next year’s calendar:

  • We are planning 173 instructional days.
  • We need to be out of school as early as possible in the spring of 2019 so that there can be adequate time for construction and the start of renovations. Thus, the last day of school and Graduation will be Friday, May 24, 2019.
  • We will need to begin the 2019-20 school as late as possible to give the builders adequate time to complete the project and to allow for set up of the new facilities. Thus, the first day of school in the Fall of 2019 will be Tuesday, September 10 for grades 1-8 and Wednesday, September 11 for Pre-K and K. Yes, those of you reading carefully have noticed that our new Pre-K program will be up and running for September 2019.
  • In 2018-19, school will begin for grades 1-8 the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, September 4. But in order to schedule the required number of days, we will have a shorter spring break in March of 2019 (March 8 at noon - March 17).
  • In addition, for 2018-19, if we get walloped with snow or other closings, we will need to be in session on President’s Day, Good Friday, and Memorial Day.
  • Given the fact that we can’t control the weather, inevitably some school years will be longer and some will be shorter.

I apologize for any inconvenience these changes might cause, and thus I am giving particularly early notice of our calendar intentions for these two years. I know the enhancements these disruptions will allow will be well worth it. Plus, once we’re in school for the Fall of 2019, our calendar should be able to revert to our traditional patterns. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. After the normal comment period, we will consider this calendar final by mid-February.
