Generosity

By: Neil Mufson
Our value of the month.
While in Philadelphia over the break, I noticed a construction site that had written on the blockades surrounding it pithy sayings ascribed to some of our nation's presidents. Since this is the month we focus on the Country School value "compassion," this quote, attributed to Ronald Reagan, caught my eye: "We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone.”

This powerful notion stands at the heart of how each of us -- including our very young children -- has the ability to create a better world. Just because we can't conceive of and execute global solutions to big problems doesn't mean we can't make a positive difference. We all can help someone else. We all can do something to be kinder, better, or more generous to someone.

Through adult modeling and reinforcement of this message, children can see that they can have a powerful impact on others. They don't have to wait to change the world. It's something they can do every day. If we adults were to model, expect, and discuss this as a part of our daily routines and expectations, the results could be enormous.
