Social Studies

The social studies program exposes students to a variety of concepts in the areas of both history and geography, which provide each student with the opportunity to develop an understanding of how our physical and cultural worlds have evolved. Beginning with “here and now” and expanding to “long ago and far away,” emphasis is also placed on economics, sociology, religion, philosophy, political science, and the arts. Students develop problem-solving skills which enable them to explore and investigate their heritage and learn how they fit into a global community, living in America today.

Theme progression through the lower school years include Me and My World, My School and My Family, My Community, Our Community and Beyond, and Regions of Our Country. Fifth graders explore US History, laying a foundation for deeper investigations of those topics in seventh grade. Sixth graders study ancient cultures, and eighth graders examine historical concepts in modern contexts.

The social studies program is designed to help students learn about the great ideas, issues, and controversies of the past and present to help them become perceptive and concerned citizens of the world. Connections are established between the students’ ideas about the local community, the state, the country, and the world.
