The Importance of Art in Schools

By: Gina Brent
Ms. Brent spent part of her summer on a professional development excursion in New Mexico.
This summer, I had the unique opportunity to “Explore the Artistic Spirit of Santa Fe and Albuquerque” through The Country School’s Professional Development Pinkard Grant. While this opportunity was an intense study visiting museums, cultural centers, tours, presentations, and visiting artists’ homes, it also served to reinforce my perspective on art, the world around us, and the importance of art in schools.

Art, in itself, is a strong medium for sharing feelings, communicating thoughts, and provoking thought. It encourages students to discover who they are, becoming confident and enthusiastic about sharing their creativity. Art in schools gives students the opportunity to explore their own creative thought process by using a wide variety of materials with no "right or wrong" answer. In this age of technology, it is one of the remaining hands-on classes that provides an outlet to physically use materials that otherwise could become a lost art. After all, visual images are fundamental sources for understanding.

Art in schools provides a strong structure for learning and a solid foundation for students to build from. It is only after a student has been educated that they can make informed choices. Students learn about themselves and others, and develop tolerance and a sense of global awareness. And, to top it off, Art is one of the classes students truly look forward to!

I was fortunate enough to go on a transformative journey, thanks to the Pinkard Grant, and return to school with even more points of reference to use in the classroom.
