Halloween Activities for You and Your Child

By: Patti Godlee
Kindergarten teacher Patti Godlee offers up some fun activities to do with your child to get into the Halloween spirit.
Fall is here, the leaves are changing colors, and the air is getting cooler. That means one thing…HALLOWEEN is coming!

Get your little ones excited about the holiday with Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. To the annoyance of her cat, a kindly witch allows a dog, a bird, and a frog - who have helped her retrieve things she has lost - to ride on her broomstick, making it top-heavy. The broom is destroyed by a fire-breathing dragon who threatens to eat the witch, but the creatures band together to impersonate a monster and save her. As a result, she fashions a luxurious new broom, on which they can all ride comfortably.

Here are several follow-up activities:

1) Find a Rhyme

Make a small witch’s hat and tape it to a popsicle stick, plastic spoon, or ruler. Then, go back through the book and look for rhyming words, and when you hear two words that rhyme, hold up the witch’s hat! This will introduce your preschooler to the concept of rhyming.

2) Witch Hat Cookies

Using the solid chocolate side of fudge-striped cookies, place an unwrapped Hershey’s kiss in the middle of each cookie and pipe orange icing around the base of the kiss.

3) Make a Witch

Using green construction paper, make a long face and cut strips of orange paper for hair. Cut a a pointy hat out of black paper and white circles for eyes. For a long, pointy nose, use green paper and make a little longer than you want the finished nose to be so that you can fold one end over and glue it to make it 3D.

4) Enjoy the beautifully animated videos below.
