Construction Begins

By: Neil Mufson
On or about Monday, April 23, the construction project made possible by our “It’s Our Time” campaign will spring to life. The first phase of the construction involves our new pick up, drop off, and parking area which, when complete, will dramatically enhance the safety, convenience, and appearance of our campus.
As the project begins, fencing will be erected that will isolate the large site on which all of our Goldsborough Street rental houses once stood. This will include the dirt area immediately adjacent to the current paved parking area. For the remainder of the 2017-18 school year, parking on campus will be limited to paved areas. We ask that families that park in the First Wesleyan Church’s parking lot for athletics or special events be extremely considerate of this generous neighbor that is going to help take away some of the inconvenience of the construction period by periodically allowing us to use their lots.

I will be speaking to all the children before dirt begins to move about the importance of not going into the construction area for any reason. I ask that you reinforce this with your children and cooperate with the intent of any fencing or restricted access area, even during times when things look safe or like there is a lack of activity.

On the morning of Wednesday, May 30, prior to our Graduation and Awards Day rehearsal, we will have a formal groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on our new Upper School building. More details on that brief but momentous event will be forthcoming.

Construction on the new Upper School building will begin on Monday, June 4, the first weekday after Graduation. Beginning that day, our construction partners will begin fencing off all current parking areas and removing all of the pavement. This will make the school virtually unreachable from Goldsborough Street during the summer months. Accordingly, we ask for the next two summers that you not come to school unless absolutely necessary and unless you have called first so that we can help identify the best accessibility. During this period, the church has given faculty and staff permission to park in their lot and walk on our playing fields to the designated entrance (which will sometimes be the flagpole entrance, sometimes the breezeway door adjacent to the library, and sometimes through the main garage door of the field house.) We are working out details for the best access during our Jump Into K program, the second full week of June.

When school reopens in September, most of the new parking lot will be complete. (Construction of the new Upper School will continue until August 2019.) The school’s new road entrance and exit from Goldsborough Street will be opposite Merrick Lane, considerably further west on Goldsborough Street than it is currently.

From the illustration below, you will see there are basically three loops in the new parking lot. The central drop off loop and the far drop off/parking areas adjacent to the playgrounds will be complete for September. The loop closest to Goldsborough Street will be inaccessible for use during 2018-19 because that will be the construction company’s staging, delivery, and storage area. Quite late this summer, I will be informing you how our drop off and parking procedures will work for 2018-19. I can already tell you they will be inconvenient and lacking in capacity — until the fall of 2019 when we will see the major enhancement that the completed project makes possible.

I guarantee that our construction project will causes every person affiliated The Country School some inconvenience. It will take cooperation, good will, respect, and a sense of humor for us all to get through it smoothly. But the pay off will be enormous. I also guarantee that you will ultimately think the trade-off worth it. It’s Our Time!
