Pre-K The Country School Way

By: Annie Hasselgren
Our admissions director details plans for our forthcoming Pre-Kindergarten program for 4-year-olds, launching in the fall of 2019.
As we construct a big, beautiful new Upper School, exciting plans for our smallest students have been unfolding in the background. We will usher in the 2019-2020 school year by welcoming not just Kindergarten through 8th grade students, but also our inaugural Pre-K class—the Country School class of 2029!

Our current Upper School science classroom in the far corner of the Kindergarten hallway will be renovated into a modern, well-appointed space with easy access to the Little Toy. Our child-centered program for 4-year-olds will be structured to promote inquiry and discovery, with a thoughtfully-designed curriculum focused on age-appropriate academics, social-emotional skills, outdoor education, hands-on play, and the development of the children not just as students but as people.

Our Pre-K students will feel free to take smart risks, express themselves, build relationships, and develop a strong sense of self in an environment that nurtures and appreciates the strengths and unique qualities of each child. Experiential, hands-on, meaningful learning will equip them with the tools to move seamlessly into Kindergarten and will build the foundation for becoming increasingly responsible and independent at an age-appropriate rate.

In Pre-K, our students will:

  • learn to use oral and written language and cultivate a positive attitude about reading
  • develop an awareness of numbers, patterns, relationships, and measurement
  • make connections between mathematics and real life
  • explore possibilities that exist within the physical and natural world
  • be exposed to a broad variety of media: painting, cutting, stamping, clay-building, stitching, beading, weaving, collage, etc.
  • learn about beat, rhythm, tempo, and melody through music
  • learn about themselves and others in relation to the world around them through social studies
  • learn the basics of speaking and understanding Spanish by using puppets, songs, and rhymes
  • develop small and large muscle control, eye-hand coordination, and improve collaboration/teamwork skills through a multitude of activities and games through physical education
  • learn about our 9 core values and increase their capacity to understand and regulate emotions, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships with peers and adults, and make responsible decisions
  • play and work with each other in order to hone their social skills with guidance and support from adults and peers
  • and much more!
